Australia's best quality UGGs and sheepskin products
It’s no secret that here at Mortels, we pride ourselves on being Australian-made, Australian-owned and one of the longest and continuously operating Sheepskin factories in the world. From The Big UGG Boots to the history of the Mortel family, read below to find out more about who we are and our multi award-winning family business located in the Hunter Region of NSW.
Why Mortels Sheepskin Factory
We know what Aussies want when it comes to UGGs and sheepskin products. We are proudly Australian owned and made, and to us nothing is better than local. Expert shoe crafting has been passed down through the Mortel family for over 150 years; we’ve been making the best quality UGGs since 1958.
Why choose Aussie Made?
Mortels is one of the oldest running and most experienced UGG boot manufacturers in the world. Our sheepskins are specially selected from Australian grown sheep and tanned to meticulous standards. Being completely Australian owned and run means we understand the importance of producing high quality, hard wearing, A-grade quality sheepskin products for Aussies.
About our multi-award winning Australian-owned Family Business
Frank Mortel (master shoe craftsman) and wife Rita emigrated from the Netherlands in 1956, bringing with them the trade of shoe crafting. This trade has been carefully handed down through the Mortel family for 3 generations, now it is in the care and capable hands of Tony Mortel and wife Stephanie who took over the reins in 1992. We have expanded to the greater Hunter Region as well as national and international customers through consistently delivering on quality, experience and expertise. We love what we do!
Quality assurance for ultimate comfort
Our Australian made UGG boots and sheepskin products are made with the utmost care and precaution, to ensure we can provide the best quality production over and over again. If you’ve been on one of our factory tours, you will know how organized our operational manufacturing plant is, and how much attention goes into individually crafting even just one pair of Mortels UGGs. We consider everything when crafting your pair of UGGs, from upper and innersole comfort to traction and stiffened heels. Mortels sheepskins are specially selected from Australian grown sheep, and carefully handled from raw materials through to the finished product.
The Australiana Shearing Shed
From our purpose built Australiana shearing shed style premises, fully guided tours are conducted through the factory on a raised viewing platform where visitors can experience the sights and sounds of a fully operational manufacturing plant. Your tour guide is often a member of the Mortel family and visitors will be guided to see a world famous Australian product in the making with these friendly interactive experiences.
The Big UGG Boots
What’s even better than a pair of comfortable, A-grade quality Mortels UGGs? The Big UGG Boots of course! Mortels Sheepskin Factory, Thornton, is home to the world’s biggest UGG Boots. These big UGGs are 13 times the size of a women’s size 8 UGG boot. They are located in the Hunger Region of NSW and were first erected Monday 20th April 2015. Australia’s iconic footwear is now a significant landmark, which we are proud to host so you can snap a prime photo opportunity next time you’re in the area!
What makes a great woman’s UGG?
For our ladies, we’ve crafted the most stylish, comfortable and practical UGGs. Our womens range caters to women of all ages and shoe sizes, no matter your taste in style - we’ve got a pair just for you. With durability and quality in mind, and a little extra flair and style, our womens range will carry you through Winter with ease and warmth.
How to care for your Mortels UGGs
Protect your footwear against stains and water marks by treating them prior to wearing them for the first time. We recommend you spray the exterior with an UGG or suede protector spray which will help repel water and make cleaning of stains more effective and easier later on. If your sheepskin footwear has got wet, let them dry naturally without direct heat source, and reapply the protector spray.
Sheepskin is a supple and luxurious leather. It is natural, soft, warm, cosy and comfy, but it isn’t tough like other leathers. With a little care, common sense and damage prevention, your sheepskin footwear can last many years.
